Pride 2023

I was hired by basic., a Birmingham-based fashion store, to design a special event poster for their annual Pride photoshoot. The given theme for the shoot was "queers in the city," and it took place at Citywalk, featuring individuals from diverse backgrounds and identities. My goal was to create a poster that seamlessly embodied both the store's specific theme and the essence of its location.

basic. is renowned for its simplistic yet bold clothing, with a minimalistic branding approach. To align with their identity, I aimed to design a poster that exuded these characteristics.

Drawing inspiration from event posters of the late 1960s and early 70s,I was inspired by that time period’s vibrant illustrations and groovy typeface. Additionally, the poster heavily draws from the location of the photoshoot itself. Citywalk, situated underneath the I-59/20 interstate bridges, stretches for a mile in uptown Birmingham, boasting parks, shops, and leading to the BJCC concert hall. To pay homage to this iconic location, I incorporated curvatures and stacking in the title font, mimicking the bridge structures. The overall style is reminiscent of the bold fonts popular during the mid-twentieth century. Furthermore, Citywalk is famous for its LED ribbon lights adorning the bridge's outer edges. To integrate this distinctive feature, I chose to incorporate the rainbow flag in the background, with lines that subtly curve akin to the sidewalks along the trail.

In conclusion, the poster adeptly captures all the elements of the event, delivering a visually stunning representation.
